Are You One of Our 30,000 missing members?

Mensa is your organization ...

If your score on a standardized I.Q. test is higher than the scores of 98 percent of the general population. 'Mensa' is Latin for 'table.' Mensa is a 'round table' society for the highly intelligent that makes no distinction as to race, color, creed, national origin, age, sex, economic, educational or social status.

Mensa's stated purposes are to identify and foster human intelligence for the benefit of humanity; to encourage research into the nature, characteristics and uses of intelligence; and to provide a stimulating intellectual and social environment for its members.

Charlotte/Blue Ridge (C/BR) Mensa is an exciting, growing group ...

C/BR Mensa is for Mensans in areas with zip codes beginning with 280, 281, 282, 286 and 297, as shown in the map to the left. (For a full screen version, click here.) As of August 2009, C/BR ranks 45th among the nation's 135 local groups, with a membership of 326. But if two out of 100 persons qualify for Mensa, we're missing 30,000 members. If you're one of those missing members, you -- and we -- are missing out! To find out why, read on.

Mensa membership has lots of benefits ...

Our group's monthly newsletter, IdioM, has been a strong competitor for national Mensa awards. It keeps members in touch by publishing the calendar of the month's events; describing who, what, when and where about past and future events and meetings; and serving as a forum for the many viewpoints of members.

Regular events include a business meeting, a monthly meeting with planned speaker or program, and informal chat meetings in area restaurants. The planned meetings are currently held at The Captain's Galley in Matthews, and the locations for the chat meetings are in the calendar.

Previous special events in C/BR Mensa have included a Mensa Murder Mystery Weekend at the beach, a “Murder On The Lynx” treasure-hunt weekend in uptown Charlotte, and a celebration of Decadent Decades (including the latest word on Atlantis and a first-hand report on the crumbling of the Berlin Wall). We visited Discovery Place to see the Dead Sea Scrolls and ancient Pompeii. We've had cheesecake-tasting parties, and seasonal get-togethers to celebrate the Fourth of July, Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Special Interest Groups (SIGs) -- both local and national -- provide another outlet for members' special interests. One local favorite is the PigSIG (if you guessed that's for folks who like to try new restaurants and 'pig out,' you're right!) If you don't find the SIG you want -- start your own!

Mensans share your interests ...

C/BR Mensa has members who enjoy animal rights, astrology, camping, cats, classical music, cooking, country music, desktop publishing, dogs, games, parapsychology, ice skating, literacy, math, movies, painting, photography, religion, rock music, science fiction, stock-car racing, travel, woodworking, writing and more. Two C/BR Mensans recently participated on the TV game show 'Jeopardy!.'

Mensans come from all walks of life ...

They're as young as 7, as old as 92. They're accountants, commercial artists, carpenters, convenience-store clerks, engineers, housewives, interior designers, musicians, physicians, even psychics. A member who's a psychic has been on local radio and TV, and was recently featured in a local business journal article (with her predictions about the area's economy).

Here's how to qualify ...

Since the qualification scores change periodically please check out this link to our National Office: Prior Evidence

Take the Mensa I.Q. Test.

Before you take the Mensa test, you may want to request the 'Pretest.' This take-at-home is a good predictor of success with the official Mensa I.Q. test. Supervised I.Q. tests are administered by Mensa proctors in several locations in the C/BR Mensa area. If your score on this test is in the top 2 percent, you'll be offered membership in Mensa. The cost of the test is $45. There is also an informal Home Test available, which can give you a better idea what to expect. For information about obtaining the Pretest, please visit the Home Test Page on the national website.

* Please note that Mensa reserves the right to alter or modify these norms as the tests indicated are renormed or restandardized. All prior evidence submitted to Mensa will be appraised individually. Mensa reserves the right to make the final determination as to the acceptability of any test.

Mensa Membership is affordable ...

Dues are just $59 a year (including local membership and subscriptions to IdioM and the national magazine, the Mensa Bulletin). That's about 16 cents a day. (You may qualify for special student and other dues.) Mensa is a not-for-profit organization.
